Located conveniently near the intersection of 59 and 610, our board-certified ophthalmologist and cornea specialist physician has been treating dry eye patients for over 40 years, with extensive experience in treating ocular Graft-versus-Host Disease. For more information on our doctor, click here.
People who have had stem cell transplant may experience autoimmune reactions after the transplant. This condition is known as Graft-versus-Host Disease (GVHD), where the immune cells that have been transplanted into the person begin to attack healthy cells. Consequently, changes can be found in the various connective tissues of the body. For example, GVHD may involve skin, muscles, the gastrointestinal tract, and the eyes. In the case of the ocular GVHD, degenerative changes may cause sensations of dryness, tearing, and/or burning. The autoimmune response can result in damage to the ocular surface and abnormal tear film function.
Although large advances in treating Graft-versus-Host Disease have been made in the last decades, dry eye remains difficult to manage in people with this condition. Recognizing the need for more targeted and advanced treatments for oGVHD patients, we are interested in studying how effective both conventional and newer treatments may be in treating ocular GVHD.
You may want to join one of our studies because you will receive free eye care and because you may experience improvement of your eye dryness. Depending on the study, you may also receive compensation for your time upon completing the study. Last, your participation as a study subject will help pave the way for new treatments specifically targeted for ocular GVHD, and you will help the medical and scientific community to understand Graft versus Host Disease better.
While a diagnosis of oGVHD can only be made by a licensed medical professional, you may be able to gauge how dry your eyes are by taking the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire. This can help to guide what treatments or studies may be appropriate for you.
You can access the questionnaire by clicking here. If you intend to apply to be in a study, we kindly request that you attach your OSDI score.
This study is actively recruiting for patients with dry eyes after a stem cell transplant and aims to see whether conventional, FDA-approved dry eye drugs can adequately treat ocular GVHD signs and symptoms.
The study would consist of 4 visits to our Houston office across 6 weeks.
